A friend of my brother's emailed this to my brother, and then it got forwarded to me. Although I already had this info, I appreciated the layout of it all and the interest this person took to look into our family tree. What I have discovered through the years I have had this blog is that, like any other hobby or activity, some of the most passionate enjoy connecting with other like-minded folks. I learn from many of them, and I use their research!

Online family trees can contain errors so you can't assume that it is 100% correct, however if it is correct your line is as follows:

7 Thomas Franklin Espy b: 03 DEC 1835 d: 14 MAY 1910
8 John Jolly Espy b: 11 APR 1878 d: 29 NOV 1934
9 Major Watt Espy b: 02 OCT 1907 d: 03 APR 1980
You can click on the individual names for more info. Since Thomas and Samuel were the right age to have been in the Revolutionary War, I searched for them in the DAR website. Go here:

Enter last name - Espy, first name - Samuel and state of service - NC and click search.
Samuel shows as a proven DAR patriot who was wounded at the battle of Kings Mountain. I think I told you that it was Thomas ... that was incorrect, it was Samuel.

"The internet has dozens of references to the father of Josiah Espy (b. 1670 in Ireland) as being Hugh Espy, but there is no documentation to support this. It is unfortunate that so many people propagate unsupported statements causing others to believe them due to the high volume of such postings. I subscribe to 4 Scotland government archives and none has a listing of a Hugh Espy or George Espy of any birth date. I have also been in contact with 3 professional genealogists in Scotland and none has been able to connect Josiah Espy, b. 1670 with Scottish heritage.
My tree of more than 13,000 people in the Espy/Espey family is based on Florence Espy's book published in 1906, William Espy's four volume set of books published in 1984 and more than 30,000 published records of census, birth, death, marriage, cemetery, military and church sources. "
