Q&A with Mark C. Espy, Sr.

 

This is just five months ago.  Dad was in the middle of a series of cancer treatments at MD Anderson hospital in Houston, TX.  Between treatments he'd come back to Headland, where he would rest at home, work occasionally at the bank and visit with family and friends.  He was also still pretty active with his horses.  Whenever we had the chance, Kade and I would go see him.  One visit, I asked him if I could set up the camcorder and just talk with him some.  This is what we produced.  It was a lovely morning, just after 9 AM.

# 77, delightful.  It's been a delight having you as a father, through thick and thin.  You also have been a delight to many, many others.  We love you!

I only gambled once during our Vegas stint, and, fittingly, it was on the King of Pop slots! I played $10, and managed to cash out at $30 and some change. Winnings: $20!!!!

It's Raining Nuns!

Wiregrass Legend Dies

As a kid growing up in Southeast Alabama I was very aware of two local TV personalities: Gene Ragan and Ann Varnum. And, when I happened to see them in person for the first time - Ann, at a restaurant, and Gene at a livestock show - they had star appeal, at least to me at that age.  Shows you the power of television!  Just to a share a more personal note, Ann Varnum and I have actually corresponded a few times via e-mail and by phone.  Back when Kade's sister was diagnosed with Lupus, someone told me that Ann had Lupus, and has had it most of her life. To learn more about the disease, I simply reached out to her, and she was very helpful and encouraging.  What's interesting is that, as we talked a bit more and she found about Kade's Thai cooking talents, she asked if Kade might want to be on the cooking segment of her morning show.  Someday it may happen!
