M.O. Carroll (Major Oscar Carroll) was the son of Major Carroll (my great-great-grandfather) and brother of Emma Carroll (Granny Espy, my great-grandmother).  In the photos above are two more siblings of M.O. Carroll:  John W. Carroll and Sam J. Carroll, Sr.

The Power of Music

I'm posting some music that meant a lot to family members.  Thanks to cousin Natalie for getting this started.  We had been talking about the old Espy family film and how to edit it better.  She mentioned these first two songs as ones we should use.

The Entertainer was a favorite of Major and Edith.  So was Sweet Caroline.

Marilyn and Mila loved What a Wonderful World.

Mother loved You Light Up My Life.  Really loved it!  We had those vinyl records, and we'd play it on the record player.  I would sing it aloud, and she would encourage me more and more by telling me how beautiful it sounded.  One year, likely '77 or '78 (whatever age I could write), Mother said she came home, on her birthday, and left in the typewriter was this poem I had typed for her.  Look closely, and you will see how I brought this Debby Boone song title into my poem.  Don't think it didn't impact Mother!  Sometime later she framed it and hung it on a wall.  It was a memory she loved to share.  And, in 2010, when she was in the hospital dying, and I had private time with her, I read it to her.

Greek Life

I obviously missed the dress code announcement!  Our fraternity had military origins.  Therefore, our leadership roles were structured in a military format.  I was the candidate marshal one year, which basically meant I was in charge of preparing our new class of candidates (pledges) for brotherhood.  On this day we were welcoming our new candidate class.

Our fraternity didn't win the competition the three years I was involved - and probably never have. But we had fun!  In 1990, we had a car mechanic theme.  And then in 1991, it was Rock and Roll.  And in 1992, I think we were cowboys.

Step Sing was a big, big deal.  My parents certainly came up to Birmingham to see it.
How I got put in the front, I  don't know.  Second from left.

We are a little bit off here!  I'm second from left.

And the same!

My favorite song was It's Still Rock and Roll (by Billy Joel).

I tried to find one of our performances on YouTube, but had no luck.  So instead, to give you an idea
of what Step Sing really is, here's a Samford fraternity that did very well in 1990.
