This is the exact "boat" that they sailed.  The article above refers to it as Eagle 36.  Naval history websites show it as USS Eagle 36 or USS Eagle PE-36.  It was built by the Ford Motor Co., and was a "submarine chaser" designed for patrolling US shoreline.

Major Watt Espy and the B'ham contingent reached New Orleans by taking a train at the Terminal Train Station in Birmingham, Alabama.  I'm guessing that's how they also arrived back.
