Standing behind Alabama Governor John Patterson is my mother, Dinah Grace.  Mother, a high school junior at Abbeville High School, had been crowned Queen of the Henry County Civil War Centennial Celebration.  The pageant was held in Abbeville, and included ladies from all over the county.  A few days after the pageant, Governor Patterson came to Henry County for the commemoration and formally crowned the queen at the Henry County Centennial Costume Ball in Headland.  Be sure to read Governor Patterson's letter to my mother.

We were thinking of you this afternoon and the sadness you have had so recently. I don't think you ever get to the point when you don't miss your Mother. Reading some of your writings about Dinah, I feel I know the real person so much better. She must have been a loving, warm-hearted woman. She certainly raised (reared) one special young man. Can't speak for your siblings cause I don't know them, but you "do her proud". Will be thinking of you, especially tomorrow. Brenda, 2013
