We left Asheville at 2 PM and drove to Highlands. On the drive south from Franklin - Hwy 64 - we stopped off at four waterfalls (Day One below), before continuing on to Highlands, where we spent two nights. Originally, over the course of our weekend getaway, we had hoped to see ten waterfalls. However, due to a bit of fatigue and desire to get on back to Asheville, we ended up not going to Rainbow Falls, Drift Falls and Turtleback Falls, all in Gorges State Park. The goal is to do them this summer. But this is what we did accomplish, and the exact order in which we did them:
Day One
Cullasaja Falls, Bust Your Butt Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Dry Falls
Day Two
Glen Falls, Secret Falls and Sunset Rock
Day Three
Whiteside Mountain, Silver Run Falls
This is a scan of the map we used. The loop is highlighted, and our destinations are marked.
Cullasaja Falls
When you finish with Cullasaja Falls, continue on to the others until you finally reach Silver Run Falls. Another way to reach them is under hiking in the categories. Very quickly, our favorite destinations were Dry Falls, Secret Falls, Sunset Rock and Whiteside Mountain. Yet we definitely recommend all of these. If you are coming to the area for the first time, it's very hard to beat the Asheville-Franklin-Highlands-Cashiers-Brevard-Asheville loop drive.
