I was once told by a family member that I was selfish because I did not agree to come to a wedding of a person who was not actually family. The wedding was four hours away, and I was not close to her. Plus, I had other duties. Anyway, I found Ayn Rand's book helpful!
If you have ever been called selfish or you thought others were being selfish, read this book. I read it many years ago. Ayn Rand turns conventional wisdom on its head!
“To love is to value. Only a rationally selfish man, a man of self-esteem, is capable of love—because he is the only man capable of holding firm, consistent, uncompromising, unbetrayed values. The man who does not value himself, cannot value anything or anyone.”

Ayn Rand was a Russian-Jewish immigrant to the USA. Her family was from St. Petersburg. She was really steely, like my grandmother (Dorothy Grace) was. I respect them both!
