Kate Helen (Vann) Luttrell's memories
I went with them in a big Buick, which was very comfortable. It was a vacation planned by Major and Edith, and it was right after the war. We saw the movie star Eleanor Parker on the hotel elevator. Among other things, we went to a movie that had an intermission with a famous piano player. We went up to the top of the Empire State Building, and we also rode in a boat.
On the drive up, we went to Monticello and then over to Washington. We went by train from DC to NYC, but had to fly back to DC due to a railroad strike. In NYC we went inside Chase Manhattan Bank and met an officer who Major knew. He helped us get plane tickets. We were thankful to him because it was not easy to arrange. Mark was staying with Grace. He told her he wanted Julian to take him out to the Knowles farm, which he did. Edith worried about Mark while they were gone.
If I told you that Watty Espy later got Eleanor Parker's autograph, would you believe me?
