Long before Covid-19 and well before any of the protests downtown over the summer, I started seeing more and more property destruction in Asheville. Primarily graffiti. It was first apparent to me in West Asheville, which already had a grunge look - an edge that I have always liked. However, this was different. A lot of buildings were being marked by graffiti. I am not talking about urban art, which Asheville is known for - the good stuff. Not that. No way. I love it! Take a look at a building in North Asheville (below). I remember once seeing a new bus stop even, out in front of Harris Teeter. It was a cool new design that cost taxpayers money. Who else pays for it?!?! Before it was even finished, it had been vandalized. Of course, then that cost money to repair. Even some of Asheville's beautiful murals have been targeted. The ones under HWY 240 (on Merrimon Av) come to mind. I would ask the people of Asheville: Is this something you desire?!? Who's around to protect property?
And then see what happened last year in the River Arts District.
