The RAD

In the distance, you can see a few tents - basically a homeless encampment.  On the other side of the French Broad River (across from 12 Bones), there's an unbelievable number.  What's happened in Portland, OR and L.A. is starting to occur more and more in Asheville.  Does it mean we ignore it, feel embarrassed about it, embrace it or what?  This is the world we live in.

We went to Foundation Falls in the River Arts District (RAD) to get some ribs at 12 Bones Smokehouse.  Although they are highly touted and even nationally-recognized, the last few times we've been (including this one), they have been below mediocre - at least the ribs.  I hate to say that, because I am all about positivity.  And I have always loved 12 Bones!!  Their ribs, though, have been way overcooked.  This drop in quality could be a result of establishing another location, and even getting into the brewery business.  Start doing too many things, and your top people can't be everywhere.  Hope they sort it out.  Their location in the RAD is fabulous.  There's tons of art, a coffee shop, a skateboarding park, art studios, wine bars and even a newly opened greenway along the river for biking and walking.  My advice to tourists would be to stick with pulled pork or brisket at 12 Bones, or consider a few of the other barbecue places in town.  Luella's is good.  And there's another one on the South Slope that's pretty good.
