I have always loved movies. But doesn't everybody?!?! I'd say only in the last five to ten years or so has my interest waned - but that's a story for another day. Not long ago, though, I was thinking about actors that have made the biggest impression on me. Longevity was a huge factor. Had I seen the actor in movies when I was child, and then many years after? Were they in good movies? And then there was talent. How skilled did they seem? Could they play a variety of roles? Did they have starring roles only, or could they play supporting parts? Were they someone that made a movie a lot better because they were in it? Was it sometimes just a nice surprise to discover that they were in the movie? Did they have a certain presence (voice, look, style, etc.) that was very memorable? And then there were some other variables I imagine the person having. Could you imagine learning the acting craft from them? Would they be somebody you could envision hanging out with and hearing their stories? They would have to be relatable, or just seem like they would be. So after giving it some thought, I came up with Gene Hackman. The first movies I remember seeing him in - although I didn't know his name then - were Superman and Superman II. And when I saw him in Hoosiers, that was it.
Here are some of my favorite Gene Hackman movies:
Hoosiers
Crimson Tide
The Firm
Superman & Superman II
The Chamber
Mississippi Burning
Enemy of the State
Runaway Jury
What was your favorite Gene Hackman movie? Who would be your favorite actor?
