Sauna House

Kade and I spent a couple of hours at Sauna House this past Thursday.  In the past we have experienced the bath cultures in South Korea, Japan and Russia, and I enjoyed saunas in Kazakhstan, Hungary and the Czech Republic in my early twenties.  So when I heard about this Scandinavia-inspired sauna on Asheville's South Slope, I just had to give it a try.  Not surprisingly, we really enjoyed it.

The best part about Sauna House is that all you need to do is show up with your swimsuit.  It's so well-designed and thought-through, you don't have to use a lot of mental energy figuring things out.  It's not intimidating or confusing, in other words.  The sauna "process" with helpful reminders on time limits is clearly written out on the walls.  There's also friendly, well-trained staff close by.  Trust me, the hard part is maintaining the discipline and will to stay in the sauna for 15 minutes, then to remain in the cold plunge pool for one to three minutes right afterwards.

After each hot and cold treatment, you rest for 15 minutes before going right back and doing it all over again.  The rest intervals and rehydrating (filtered water is provided) are very essential.

We purchased three two-hour sessions (under $30 each visit).  When we complete those, we very likely will pay for seven more sessions (even more of a discount) to help take us through the rest of the year.  I think winter will the best time to experience the sauna.  The cold plunge, though?!?!  Oh my!
