1979

The long-closed Espy-Griffin gin went up in flames in 1979.  On our walk last October ('20), I believe Don (McClendon) shared that it was in the area where the Espy Mercantile Company warehouses are today.

Actually, there were two warehouses there.  Mr Griffin took one and Espy Mercantile took the other one.  The one Mr. Griffin got was the one that actually burned.  The old gin components that could be used were moved to the new modern gin, which was built out on 134 West where the Gold Kist facilities are today - across the road from the Headland Peanut Co-op.  The new gin was built around 1963.  My brother Joe worked for Mr. Fred Griffin there the year it was built.  - Billy Woods
