Day #5

We drove from Damariscotta to Port Clyde for overnight parking.  From there we would take a boat to  Monhegan Island, where we'd stay one night.  A lot of people do the day trip, which is better than nothing.  However, if you can swing it, you have to stay at least a night.  My cousin had done it, and we had to make it happen.

Down there is where you catch the boat.  If you're desiring to stay on the island, be sure to research and book your accommodations months in advance.  You boat ticket you can work out a few weeks before departure, but during the summertime, I wouldn't wait even on it.

That's the lighthouse that was in Forrest Gump.

Out there is the sister vessel to the one we were on.

Monhegan Island

There she is!

We booked a night in The Island Inn.  There it is.

The walls throughout the inn were covered with beautiful art.

Pay special attention to this scene.

Remember these cliffs.

This is the view from our room.  See the dock down there, and our boat?

That back right corner - that table for two - is where we sat for dinner.   We were able to make a reservation upon arrival.

I took this image while standing on the front porch.

Think back to that painting.  This is on our first hike, the day of arrival.  The key is get to the island right at check-in.  After resting a bit, you can start hiking.  There are a few easy trails that you can research online.  There are also maps in the inn, and all the trails are marked carefully.  Just play it smart.  Take plenty of water, a sun hat and something to snack on.  Oh, and wear good walking/hiking shoes and clothing.

I love this one!

We continued on.  It was a loop trail that covered one of the prettiest stretches of the island's cliffs.

What a joy it is to look out and see the perimeter of the island, and to realize that you can hike it!

I love cemeteries!

A bit later, after another rest, we hiked to Lobster Cove.  It was another easy one!

We were at a little beach.  See The Island Inn up there?

Signs make it easy!

Made it to Lobster Cove.  Talk about basking in the sun!

It was so peaceful, and the temperature was perfect.

Once back at the inn, I discovered this vintage portrait.
