In January of 1997, Prince performed at Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, Alabama. I recall being in B'ham around that time, because I saw his name on the marquee. Back then, I wasn't a big fan of his, but I certainly loved his music. In that time period, you got word of events in the newspaper or the radio. You also had to buy tickets through Ticket Master, which required you to call an 800 #, hopefully get through, buy tickets and then pick them up at mall department store customer service counter. That sounds crazy compared to how it is today. So, I was in Birmingham, and just saw his name. Perhaps I was a bit surprised, but it didn't motivate me to look into it. All these years later, I think it was just dumb that I didn't go. It was the young brain at work! Never saw Michael Jackson live, and only saw Prince in 2011, in Greenville, NC. It was that concert - that magnificent concert - and his shocking death only five years later that turned me into a really big fan.
