I have seen many journal entries and copies of letters where Uncle Watty (Watt Espy) was sharing about the start of his new interest: compiling death penalty data. In fact, I have a scan of a journal entry that shows the date when he was seriously grappling with the idea of making his research a career path. He had just started out documenting death penalty cases and naturally had some excitement over this. He even said in a letter to someone, "In ten years I ought to be finished with the project." Instead, it became his passion for at least three decades. Funny, isn't it?
When I find the scan of the journal entry, I will add it here.
