My dad had horses when he was growing up. He also had a pet goat. But it didn't stop there! He had a pet alligator and even a pet spider monkey! I remember Dad sharing that his dad (Major Espy) drove him and maybe another person or two up to Atlanta to pick up the monkey at a person's home. Seems like he said they went to a sketchy part of town. The drive back to Headland was a wild one he said. I don't recall the monkey's name, and I'm not sure how long he had it. Dad said it escaped one time and was found on the roof of somebody's house. It either died then or soon afterwards.

I remember the monkey escape also. It wound up on my mother and daddy's roof. Majors farm hands were trying to catch it but I think they were afraid of it. After a few hours my mother got a stool stood on it with a banana the monkey came down to her she grabbed his arm. He bit down on her hand she put him in a croaker sack one of the men were holding. She went to town to the Dr. When she returned home there was a dozen roses and a box of chocolate on the kitchen table. No one locked there doors in those days. We lived just 4 houses down the road.
