Hardwick/Vann Dental Cabinet
This cabinet was refinished by
Gene Pollan in April, 2004 (Pollan Wood Working, 3100 West Wilson Street in
Dothan, AL, W:
334.792.9842) at a cost of $765. Mr.
Pollan refinished the cabinet, its 22 drawers and repaired the broken marble
top corner. He could not locate one
small drawer knob but did find a facsimile.
The cabinet was made by The
Harvard Company of Canton, OH. Mr.
Pollan estimates it to have been made sometime 1880-90. Similar pieces in 2004 ranged from $4800 to
$52,000. He estimated this piece to be
valued at about $6000 in 2004.
This cabinet was given to William
F. Vann, Jr. in January of 2004 by Dr. James W. Vann. It was given to Jim in 1955 by Charles F.
Hardwick, Jr. It resided in Dr. Vann’s
office on Main Street in Headland from 1955-04.
Charles
Hardwick, Jr** was the son of Charles Fred Hardwick, Sr. (DDS), born in
Headland and the son of Dr. William Pleasant “Pleas” Hardwick (MD) of
Headland. Dr. Pleas married Aunt Anna
Solomon Price, Great Grandmother Emma Solomon’s sister, so Fred was Grandmother
Emma Kate Solomon Vann’s first cousin.
His
dental office was on the second floor above the old Holly Drug Store Building
on the south square in Headland.
Granddaddy and Grandmother Vann and most of the children saw Dr.
Hardwick for their dental care.

Charles, Sr. was Grandmother Vann’s first cousin. He married Lena Shahah Hardwick of Dothan and
they had two sons. Lena’s dad was a
Russian Jew and a “mule trader” and was a principal investor in the old Farmers’ and
Merchants’ Bank that existed prior to
the Great Depression. It was one of the two banks whose merger produced the HNB in the
30s. After Charles and Lena divorced,
he married Leta ?????.
All of the deceased are buried
in the HUMC Cemetery.

Your ancestors started the Headland Bank. I know mine helped. My cousin Ligon Thomas Solomon (1881-1942) was the first president. Also my uncle Wyatt S. Oates worked there, but he was running the Cotton Seed Oil Mill when my father lived in Headland. He and mother married in 1946. He worked at the Peanut Oil Mill. Mother is Miriam Oates. She was the eldest child of the late Walter Neil Oates and Anna Mabel Gay. Mabel married my grandfather's cousin, Dr. Charles F. Hardwick in 1936. - Cousin Lawanna
