Third from left, with the big smile on his face, is "Happy" Chandler, a two-time Governor of Kentucky, US Senator from Kentucky and the MLB Commissioner who approved the contract between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Jackie Robinson, successfully integrating major league baseball. In 1956, "Happy" ran in the Democratic Presidential Primary, and this photo may have been taken at the convention. Watty Espy (second from right) served as a Democratic Delegate to the National Democratic Convention from the 3rd District of Alabama in 1956. Also, two years later, Uncle Watty ran for an Alabama State Senate seat. Click here to read more on Watty's political career. UPDATE: Discovered in one of Watty's letters that he was one of thousands of honorary colonels on Happy Chandler's staff in Kentucky. |
