I organized a late afternoon/early evening hike to Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower, which is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and just a little over an hour from Asheville. Just down the road from the tower is the Pisgah Inn, which is fabulous for sunset photos. And if you want drink a beer up there, or have a meal, or do some more hiking, the Pisgah Inn is a great spot to rest and get your bearings. The Mt. Pisgah hike trailhead is also a stone's throw away. You could easily do Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower and Mt. Pisgah in half a day....not even that.
Above is a video of a hike I did to the tower six years ago. I went alone, which you can do. Now, I think it's best to always have another person when hiking. This video will give you more of an idea of the trail. My camera had a bit of a glitch, and perhaps I was a bit too talkative. But you can get an idea of how the area looks in the very early Spring, when the leaves have not come back.
