This is a reply I emailed to somebody close in the mid-2000s. I would say it has aged well, especially the remarks on politics. Now we could add social media. And maybe I could add, by text. Nothing, though, beats hearing a voice and looking people in the eye.
That whole e-mail could be shredded with a bit of Socratic questioning. I just find, on topics like this (politics), other than a comment here or there, it wastes a lot of energy to battle people set in their views. By phone, I could fire off a few questions and they might realize how little they've really researched these issues. And, if there's a good exchange, they could share reasonable opinions and I could learn, too. None of us is above learning....hopefully. At the end of the day, our local culture, our radio talk shows, the priests and news shows determine how many people see things. And unlike something funny like key lime pies, politics is more incendiary and divisive. It divides people, unfortunately, much like religion.
