On to Hartford

Saw this "landmark" many times on our journey.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg was stunning.  And overall, Harrisburg made a very favorable first impression.  The historic stone bridges and Riverfront Park were beautiful.  It's a medium-sized city that I'm sure gets overlooked by people who don't reside in Pennsylvania.  Makes me wonder how many other US state capitals fall into this category.  Montgomery, AL is probably one.

I wanted to video this parking lot attendant at Hershey Park.  We talked a bit.  He said he pulled for Auburn over Penn State, and that his favorite college team was the Alabama Crimson Tide.

We did explore Allentown a bit - the downtown anyway.  Even played Billy Joel's song on the way.  Allentown surprised me in a couple of immediate ways:  One, it was bigger than I thought.  Not skyrise big, but a fairly large downtown area with quite a few people.  Two, housing was very rundown, and lots of people were living in poverty.  Very sketchy.  And not just one or two blocks - a pretty big area.

This made me start missing my Asheville bears and wondering if I might see one in Maine.  They have a lot.  Why not?!

This 10 mile stretch - before reaching the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge -  was the only real traffic slow-down we experienced the entire trip.  The US Interstate Highway system is remarkable.  Some friends from Uzbekistan, who have traveled quite a lot around Europe, told me that the US is #1 in terms of moving traffic and was an indicator to them just how developed we are.  They drove from NYC to New Orleans and back.

very impressive bridge

Picked these up at the hotel thinking we'd work these in on way home.

Luray to Harrisburg, PA to Hershey, PA to Allentown to Hartford, CT
