William Watt Espy and John Jolly Espy, Sr. were siblings. Their maternal great-grandparents were Samuel and Mercy (Rice) Watt, who married in Caswell County (North Carolina) in 1808. Samuel and Mercy moved to Cherokee County (Alabama). They had ten children. Their oldest child was Elizabeth Goodman "Betsy" Watt. She married Robert Marion Espy in Cherokee County. In 1854, she and Robert moved to Barbour County (Alabama). They had eight children. One of their children was Thomas Franklin Espy. Thomas was the father of William Watt Espy and John Jolly Espy, Sr.. This would make Samuel and Mercy (Rice) Watt my great-great-great-grandparents.
