Major Watt Espy and James Theodore Jackson were first cousins and Howard College (Samford University) graduates. Their parents, John Jolly Espy, Sr. and Pearle (Espy) Jackson, were siblings. Theodore's brother, Edward Gray Jackson, was also a Howard College alumnus.
