Daddy Joe had a dry goods store on the square in Abbeville. Mama Idelle ("Mama I") was a milliner. She was originally from southeast Georgia but lived for some time with her sister in Dothan. She and Daddy Joe met when she was marketing some of her hats in his dry goods store in Abbeville. She later got a job as a milliner in the dry goods store at Abbeville and eventually married "Daddy Joe".
- Jane (Espy) Gamble memories
Based on what I've read, JC Espy's store burned down, perhaps with many other town businesses. JC ("Daddy Joe") then worked in another store on the square - one his brother John Darby Espy, Sr. owned.
