Senator Obama Campaigns in Asheville

Perhaps you can spot Kade and me. This is actually when I was filming a video!

For more photos of the day, see The Citizen Times here.  About 28,000 attended the rally.

Here are my photos!

And a friend took this photo.  That's my red cap.

As Obama was exiting the gymnasium for his walk down to the field, my brother Mark shook his hand.

Something else you might find interesting -

President Obama paid a visit to Atlanta at about the time you likely returned home from your trip. One of the stops he made was to College Heights Early Childhood Center in Decatur, GA. He went there in an effort to promote early childhood education.

I find this interesting because College Heights Elementary School now the College Heights Early Childhood Center) was built on property that my parents owned back in the 40's. Daddy had bought five acres about three blocks from where we lived. He had a huge WWII) Victory Garden on a large portion of the property. I remember there were some gullies on the land, and the area sloped down to a creek. That part was left wooded. During the day air-raid practices in WWII, if we were working over at the vegetable garden, we would run to the creek since the woods would hide us. During the practice raids no one was supposed to be seen. Fairly small airplanes would often drop circulars of some sort (maybe practice bombing?), and I found it fun to go looking for the papers and pick them up when the All Clear signal sounded. At about the time my parents divorced, the City of Decatur planned to continue a sewer line down south on McDonough St. - along the front of the property. Either my parents could not afford to pay for their charge of the sewer line (a great deal of front footage), or it just wasn't feasible. Daddy was leaving Decatur for good by then. The property was sold to the City of Decatur.

Several years later the City of Decatur built College Heights Elementary School. Since then I think they used the school building for several purposes other than the original elementary school. The City of Decatur has let it be known that no federal funding has supported the College Heights Early Childhood Center.

Sort of a strange idea - realizing the President of the United States stepped foot on property where my family and I spent many many days.
