My sister and I did a little walk around the square, and reminisced a bit. We even bumped into one of Headland's finest! Perhaps you know who he is?!!?
An auspicious year!
My goal was to go through years 1971 through 1981. My last Headland visit I was able to do 82-89. This is at the local library, by the way.
I think that's Charles Woods on the left.
Progress!
I think there's a yoga studio on the square. And at least once a week there's a class in the square park.
site of the old Warnaco store
My sister drove us a bit around Dothan. I wanted to see where the Warnaco store used to be. We also drove by little plaza where our orthodontist (Dr. Dan Helms) was, and then to the Baskin Robbins that was nearby. The BR's building is there, but it's something else now. Our grandmother Dot would often take us to our orthodontist appointments, then afterwards go over for some ice cream. Dot loved ice cream as much or more as we did! Her favorite flavor was Pralines & Cream. One other spot I desired to see was the home where Dot's cousin (Lois) lived. We found it! Click here for more on Lois.
This was the little restaurant where we went for lunch. The chicken salad was pretty good. I need to look into the history of the area, because this restaurant and adjacent business appear to be all part of an old warehouse complex that got beautifully restored.
People asked how I was able to get vintage articles and photos. The Headland Observers, from 1964 until it was no longer published (2000s sometime), are all there. Takes me an hour to and hour and a half to go through a single year. I try to look at every single photo....not always closely, however. Looking for certain names and faces. Also, if there's a headline that catches my eye, I look over the article. But there's no time to read or to look through social news. Would be too exhausting.
Looking out from our townhome on the Headland square.
great cinnamon rolls, and, I hear, wonderful donuts
this place could compete in any big city, anywhere
